BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Canada Ukraine Foundation (CUF) is a non-profit corporation registered under the Canada Corporations Act by Letters Patent issued on August 28, 1995. It is recognized by Revenue Canada as an organization that qualifies for tax-exempt status as a registered charity with an official registration number. CUF is also registered as a charitable foundation in Ukraine through its subsidiary - "Klen Foundation".

The CUF was founded in 1995 as an initiative of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) for the purpose of developing, organizing, coordinating and delivering aid programs to Ukraine. The scope of these programs encompasses humanitarian, social, educational, health, civil society and religious issues and needs. In this endeavour, the CUF works closely with the UCC, the Shevchenko Foundation and numerous other Ukrainian-Canadian non-profit and charitable organizations.

Over the course of its existence, the CUF has been involved in a number of important projects and initiatives. Probably the most significant has been the organization and funding of Election Observer Missions to Ukraine in the wake of the Orange Revolution (with a total of $1.5 million raised) Also of note has been the “Children’s Hospital of the Future” project in Kyiv (a $1.0 million donation), as well as numerous exchange and assistance projects with Ukrainian universities and educational institutions coordinated through the Ukrainian Resource and Development Centre at Grant MacEwan College of Edmonton, Alberta. All told, the CUF has managed to direct more than $3 million in aid projects to Ukraine over the past eight years.

Among notable recent new initiatives is a project to assist in the continuing expansion and development of the National University – Kyiv Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA).

The CUF maintains an office in Winnipeg as well as one in Lviv, Ukraine. The current President of the CUF is Bohdan Onyschuk of Toronto. The Board of Directors of the CUF is composed of representatives of virtually all the major Ukrainian organizations in Canada as well as distinguished scholars, businessmen and politicians, including Andrew Robinson, former Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine.
