Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal supports Mental Health program in Kyiv, Ukraine

After 165 days of war, 6.4 million Ukrainians have moved to Europe, and 6.6 million people have become internally displaced in Ukraine. 5.3 thousand civilians have been killed, of which 358 were children, and 7.3 thousand have been injured. (UNHCR, IOM, OCHA, DATTALION)

This has had a detrimental effect on the mental state of the population. The most common symptoms are chronic stress, anxiety, panic attacks, sleeping problems, insomnia in adults, fear of loud noises, loss of appetite, as well as bedwetting and nightmares for children.

The Ukraine Flash Appeal 2022 has identified a need for Mental Health and Psychosocial support to 3,766,425 persons.

Crosses, flowers, and photographs mark the graves of victims of the battles for Irpin and Bucha at the cemetery of Irpin, Ukraine, on May 16

CUF-UCC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal has been supporting Open Doors – the Centre of Psychological Counselling and Trauma Therapy in Kyiv. The contract will create a network of psychologists, translators and volunteers to deliver individual and group psychological and trauma therapy services. Translation services for volunteers from abroad will be established so they can lead educational seminars on psychological aid, stabilization of children in crisis and teach parents to talk to their children about war and coping strategies.

Dr. Syvak, who manages the Centre, reported that during the first three months of the program (May/June/July), 980 clients have been serviced. They are seeing growth in the number of people turning for help and in the average number of sessions that they attend.

The Centre also runs a stabilization group for psychologists to support providers who work in high stress situations and need a place to process their experience, rebalance and stabilize. The network has served 284 psychologists in three months. There is a waiting list of 255 for August and September.

The third part of the program is to bring Ukrainian clinicians in Ukraine to American standards of education and practice. 100 psychologists have completed the two year program. 126 have started the next cycle.  This program will enable another 40 psychologists to start a new two year session. The candidates come from social and volunteer service centres, hospitals and Government establishments.

Thanks to the generous support and commitment of our donors, Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is able to continue its critical mission of providing aid and assistance to Ukraine – it ranges from immediate humanitarian relief to a long-term support, as in this case, through training of more mental health professionals, specializing in trauma therapy, so that everyone who needs and or seeks mental health support has access to high quality counseling services.

Background

The Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal has been established jointly by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and the Canada Ukraine Foundation (CUF) to formalize a coordinated approach in providing humanitarian assistance quickly and efficiently to those in need in Ukraine to address any further aggression by Russia. The main efforts of cooperation are to provide humanitarian assistance/relief in the areas of assistance to displaced persons, medical care, emergency shelter and food security.

Canada Ukraine Surgical Aid Program (CUSAP) under Canada-Ukraine Foundation

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation’s (CUF) Health Advisory Team (HAT) aims to be the partner of choice for Ukrainian healthcare institutions, NGOs, and various levels of government health ministries to build capability and capacity within Ukrainian healthcare systems and communities. Through CUF-supported and sponsored programs and projects, we promote health by enabling organizations, healthcare practitioners and healthcare promotion advocates to improve the healthcare in the communities that they serve.

The CUF Health Advisory Team was responsible for supporting and implementing a number of critical health initiatives since 2014. To date, CUF, under Dr. Antonyshyn’s leadership, has completed 7 medical missions in 4 major cities of Ukraine. The surgical teams were volunteer specialists from across Canada, and included world renowned trauma and reconstructive surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses. The main purpose of these missions was to provide consultations and surgical reconstructions to patients with complex traumatic defects who would otherwise not receive treatment including military personnel and civilians.  Thousands of individuals and their families have been directly assisted through our missions.  Most recently, we have launched both direct and remote surgical training through the Sunnybrook Ukraine Surgical Education Initiative, in partnership with Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, Canada’s leading Trauma Center.

During 7 previous Canada-Ukraine Foundation-sponsored missions to Ukraine, we have developed a remarkably effective model for mobilizing a self-sufficient comprehensive team to deliver sophisticated surgical care to war casualties.

The invasion of Ukraine has targeted military installations, political and geographic objectives, while indiscriminately bombing civilian buildings, evacuation corridors, schools and even hospitals.  Both military and civilian casualties are mounting rapidly.

We have consulted our surgery colleagues, and the Ministry of Health in Ukraine and anticipate an unprecedented and prolonged need for medical assistance, particularly in addressing post traumatic defects and deformities.

This is why we are lunching the Canada Ukraine Surgical Aid Program – CUSAP.

Your support of this program will allow:

  • Ongoing medical support to thousands of Ukrainians who have become casualties of the war
  • Collaboration, educational training and development of specialized surgeons in Ukraine and abroad

Our preliminary goal:

Run ongoing medical aid programs (every 2 months) to provide surgical care to war casualties with extended scope and range of surgical services provided by  intensivists, orthopaedic, head and neck, general, vascular, oculoplastic and burn surgeons, in addition to plastic, hand, craniofacial and neurosurgeons and paediatrics.

We have organized and fully equipped teams of volunteer Canadian nurses, anesthesiologists and surgeon specialists. The teams will be entirely self-sufficient, bringing all required surgical hardware, implant materials, medications, and disposable supplies.

First medical team (consisting of 30 volunteer medical professionals), headed by Dr. Oleh Antonyshyn, will be deploying to Czeladz, Poland in September 2022 to run a surgical and education aid mission at Powiatowy Zespół Zakładów Opieki Zdrowotnej.

Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal purchased and arranged shipment of140 metric tons of buckwheat seeds to Ukraine amidst the looming food crisis caused by Russian invasion.

Before the full-scale invasion on February 24th, Ukraine had been shipping buckwheat to various customers in Europe and Asia. Now, with Russia’s continuous shelling of Ukraine’s grain fields and its occupation of some of Ukraine’s agricultural land, a large percentage of Ukraine’s expected harvest is being destroyed. In response to these dire developments, the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada asked the Canada-Ukraine Foundation to purchase and ship the Canadian buckwheat seeds to Ukraine since their resources are limited. FYK Soba Inc. in Manitoba, a specialist in the production of premium buckwheat, generously redirected 140 metric tons of buckwheat seeds to aid Ukraine. Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal then purchased and made arrangements to transport 7 containers by sea to Germany and then on to Ukraine.

Despite the late delivery of buckwheat seeds and the fact that sowing took place only last month, a wide distribution of farmers throughout Ukraine already see initial results – buckwheat seeds have started germinating across Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Lviv, Poltava, Ternopil, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsk, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions. Overall, 70 farmers in Ukraine partook in sowing this Canadian buckwheat and the expected yield is 3,000 m/t of processed buckwheat groats. This shipment of buckwheat seeds came with personalized care from Don Fyk, the president of FYK Soba Inc., who was in direct contact with Serhiy Hromovyi, the Executive Director of the International Buckwheat Association of Ukraine, about the type of seeds being shipped and the proper care they require to give the highest yield – a true Canadian-Ukrainian partnership.

Thanks to your generous support and commitment, Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is able to continue its critical mission of providing aid and assistance to Ukraine, including this effort to enable farmers in Ukraine do what they do best – grow the grain they know.

UHA supports Summer Camps for Ukrainian displaced children

As Russia’s genocidal war of aggression against Ukraine continues, and countless Ukrainian families are forced to leave their homes and seek safety all over the world, the number of Ukrainians arriving in Canada grows each day.

To help newly-arrived families adjust to life in Canada, the UCC-CUF Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal announced the Ukrainian Canadian Summer Camps Program for displaced Ukrainian children. These camps provide a great opportunity for children displaced by the war to experience a true Ukrainian Canadian summer and provide their families with a relative sense of stability.

The Ukrainian Canadian Summer Camp Program helps cover the cost of attending summer camps run by Ukrainian Canadian organizations this summer. The Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal provides up to . $350 per child per week to, for a maximum of 2 weeks. This program is an immense success, with almost 2,000 children already participating in 32 summer camps across Canada, through almost $1 million funding support from the Humanitarian Appeal.

Additionally, the UCC-CUF Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal helped sponsor a Plast summer camp in Poland, which hosted refugees from Russia’s war against Ukraine.. Some of the youngest victims of Russia’s war were able to receive respite from the war and companionship with their peers.

The Ukrainian Canadian summer camp program was made possible by the amazing volunteers and counsellors that gave their time to create and oversee fun, safe, and enjoyable program for displaced children. As so many children are attending these summer camps, many of our organizations are looking for additional volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for a Ukrainian Canadian summer camp near you, please visit this link. The Plast summer camp in Poland is especially seeking additional volunteers to assist in the delivery of its program. The UCC-CUF Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal will be sponsoring volunteers to travel to Poland and work as counsellors in these camps. Please visit this link to learn more.

Food Boxes Delivered to Those in Need in Ukraine

THE CANADA-UKRAINE FOUNDATION HAS PURCHASED THROUGH MEEST MORE THAN 30,000 KILOGRAMS OF HUMANITARIAN AID FOR UKRAINE.

The aid comes in the form of food boxes, with each containing enough food for a month.

According to the United Nations, 15.7 million Ukrainians are in need of humanitarian aid. The war has forced over 14 million people to abandon their homes: 7 million have fled to neighbouring countries, and another 8 million have become internally displaced persons. Today, about 13 million people are living in Ukraine’s most devastated regions and often don’t have access to essential goods.

Thanks to the support of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation in partnership with the Olena Zelenska fund, the MEEST shipping and logistics corporation was able to ship 31 000 kilograms of food to recently liberated territory in the form of humanitarian food kits. These kits were assembled with the professional guidance of doctors and dietitians.

The adult food kits included a variety of high energy foods which are rich in carbohydrates, supplemented with other sources of protein and fat. These kits can feed an adult for the duration of a month. The child kits were assembled with consideration for children’s dietary needs and taste preferences. The child kits were rich in carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and calcium. The set included semolina and corn grits, pasta, oatmeal, corn and chocolate flakes, milk powder, poultry pate, cream cheese, cookies, cocoa, crackers and fruit and herbal tea.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation and its donors were instrumental in securing the materials needed to assemble these food kits. The fund of First Lady Olena Zelenska was responsible for the distribution of these food kits to Ukraine’s most devastated regions and other charitable organizations. The MEEST Corporation carried out the purchase of products, their completion in sets, packaging and delivery to Ukraine.

Victor Hetmanczuk, Chair of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation

Due to Russia’s continued assaults on Ukrainian cities the need for humanitarian aid only grows. For large corporations that wish to help Ukrainians, in my opinion, it is crucial to not only maintain, but to expand their humanitarian support. The second important task for all of us at the current time is to spread awareness about the continuing war in Ukraine through any means possible, as the world cannot grow numb to the genocide that is currently taking place in the center of Europe.

Please donate to the appeal today to support millions of Ukrainian families who have been displaced from their homes. #HelpUkraineNow

Ukrainian Canadian summer camp support program for displaced Ukrainian children across Canada

TORONTO/OTTAWA – The UCC–CUF Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal announced today the launch of the Ukrainian Canadian summer camp support program for displaced Ukrainian children to attend summer camps in Canada organized by Ukrainian Canadian organizations during the summer of 2022.

The Ukrainian Canadian summer camp support program will cover the cost for children who attend a summer camp in Canada, up to $350 per child per week for up to 2 weeks. “The Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal summer camp program will provide an opportunity for Ukrainian children – displaced from their homes because of Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine – to adjust to life in Canada, to meet new friends, and to share the joys and life experiences that no children should ever be deprived of,” stated Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. “We are very grateful to the many generous donors from coast to coast in Canada, who continue to support the Humanitarian Appeal’s efforts in delivering humanitarian relief to the Ukrainian people.”

To confirm qualifications and discuss the process and reporting guidelines, the Canada-Ukraine Foundation encourages qualifying organizations to reach out to the Foundation through your local Canada Ukraine Foundation (CUF) director (see our website) or by filling out our apply for funding form on our website.

“Children have been among the biggest victims of Russia’s war of aggression This is one small way we can help child refugees deal with the trauma of being uprooted from their lives – offering access to recreational programs with other Ukrainian children,” said Orest Sklierenko, President and CEO of the Canada Ukraine Foundation. “We look forward to working with our partners and making this program a success.”

CUF also encourages parents of children planning to attend summer camps to contact the organizers running the program and inquire about this support.

A complete list of participating organizations and links to their websites will be posted on the CUF website in the coming days.

Background

In January 2022 the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation launched the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal – a joint effort to provide humanitarian relief to displaced persons in medical care, emergency shelter and food security. Today, Russia’s increased attacks on Ukraine have resulted in 15M affected people, including 6M who have left Ukraine, the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II. Thousands of displaced Ukrainians, primarily mothers and children, have made their way to Canada.

Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal received around $40M in donations from all corners of Canada, including funds from provinces, family foundations, corporations, organizations, churches, large and small businesses, and tens of thousands of individual donors across the country. The funds deployed to date have been used to provide emergency humanitarian relief in emergency food, hygiene, and medical supplies for the millions of affected families in and around Ukraine.

Some donors have also approached the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and offered their generous donations to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada.

As a result of the increasing volume of these requests across Canada, the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal has launched a parallel Fund to track and deploy support to displaced Ukrainian families in Canada.

All donors giving to CUF can decide whether to donate to emergency humanitarian support in and around Ukraine, or to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada, by visiting the CUF website or mailing their donation to CUF’s office.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress brings together all the national, provincial, and local Ukrainian Canadian organizations under one umbrella.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation was formed in 1995 to coordinate, develop, organize, and deliver assistance projects generated by Canadians and directed to Ukraine. For almost three decades, the Canada-Ukraine Foundation has helped coordinate and provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine as it strives to strengthen its democracy through economic prosperity and freedom.

Syringes Delivered to Hospitals in Need – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Update

The Ukrainian people continue their heroic defence of their homeland from Russia’s genocidal war. The humanitarian situation in Ukraine is critical and the needs are immense. Thanks to your generous support and commitment the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is able to deliver aid and assistance– both in Ukraine and to Ukrainians who have sought refuge in bordering countries.

CUF continues to assist the currently strained healthcare sector in Ukraine, at the same time rapidly aligning our partner linkages for an impactful result. One such successful project started when Orest Sushko at Humber College in Toronto reached out to us, having recognized that a substantial quantity of a medical product could be made available for Ukraine: namely, high-quality syringes that were in supply on campus. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and now with the war in Ukraine, Humber has worked with our community partners to provide assistance whenever we could,” said Tyler Charlebois, Director, Centres of Innovation Network and Partnership Development, Humber College. “We are so pleased that more than 165,000 unused syringes left over from our COVID-19 vaccination clinics were able to be shipped to Ukraine to provide some medical supply relief during the humanitarian crisis happening there.”

Source: The Ottawa Citizen

Generous donations of life-saving equipment were collected from the Montfort Hospital, Queensway Carleton Hospital, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, The Ottawa Hospital, Brockville General Hospital, the Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Healthcare Linen Services.

The collection of donations from hospitals was led by Dr. Tetyana Rogalska, and CUF funded the logistics costs of the movement to Ukraine.

“This lifesaving equipment is in addition to the previous 60 pallets over the past 2 months. We are actively seeking additional donations from hospitals and suppliers across Canada,” said Victor Hetmanczuk, Chair of the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Committee.

Due to security issues, CUF will not identify the receiving locations institutions in Ukraine. Please donate to the appeal today to support millions of Ukrainian families who have been displaced from their homes. #HelpUkraineNow

Two Months of Russian Invasion – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Update

It has been two months since Russia launched a full-out invasion of Ukraine, bombing Ukrainian cities and towns, targeting civilians and committing war crimes and crimes against humanity on a massive scale.

Earlier this week, Canada’s House of Commons unanimously recognized Russia’s actions acts of genocide against the Ukrainian people

The Ukrainian people are heroically defending their homeland from Russia’s war, but the humanitarian situation is critical and the needs immense. Thanks to your generous support and commitment the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is able to deliver aid and assistance– both in Ukraine and to Ukrainians who have sought refuge in bordering countries.

The Appeal has delivered millions of dollars in crucial aid that is helping people survive through partnerships and cooperation with more than a dozen organizations.

One such organization is the Ukrainian Deminers Association (UDA).The UDA has been a partner of CUF since mid 2021 and up until February 24 they were helping identify land mines for safe removal so that farmers might once again safely work their fields to provide food and a livelihood. The UDA’s adaptability in changing their scope to now deliver humanitarian aid demonstrates the value of CUF’s strong and dynamic working relationships with its partners on the ground who are able to respond quickly to the changing needs.

The Ukrainian Deminers Association is providing assistance to war-affected people in the oblasts of Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv and Kharkiv oblasts. As of two weeks ago, thanks to support provided by the CUF, over 1300 people have been provided with assistance – food, medicine, hygiene products, building materials and money of up to UAH 1,500 per person. The UDA stated, “We continue working for the sake of Ukrainians and our victory! We truly thank our Ukrainian Canadians and concerned Canadian citizens!”
