Ukrainian Canadian summer camp support program for displaced Ukrainian children across Canada

TORONTO/OTTAWA – The UCC–CUF Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal announced today the launch of the Ukrainian Canadian summer camp support program for displaced Ukrainian children to attend summer camps in Canada organized by Ukrainian Canadian organizations during the summer of 2022.

The Ukrainian Canadian summer camp support program will cover the cost for children who attend a summer camp in Canada, up to $350 per child per week for up to 2 weeks. “The Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal summer camp program will provide an opportunity for Ukrainian children – displaced from their homes because of Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine – to adjust to life in Canada, to meet new friends, and to share the joys and life experiences that no children should ever be deprived of,” stated Alexandra Chyczij, National President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. “We are very grateful to the many generous donors from coast to coast in Canada, who continue to support the Humanitarian Appeal’s efforts in delivering humanitarian relief to the Ukrainian people.”

To confirm qualifications and discuss the process and reporting guidelines, the Canada-Ukraine Foundation encourages qualifying organizations to reach out to the Foundation through your local Canada Ukraine Foundation (CUF) director (see our website) or by filling out our apply for funding form on our website.

“Children have been among the biggest victims of Russia’s war of aggression This is one small way we can help child refugees deal with the trauma of being uprooted from their lives – offering access to recreational programs with other Ukrainian children,” said Orest Sklierenko, President and CEO of the Canada Ukraine Foundation. “We look forward to working with our partners and making this program a success.”

CUF also encourages parents of children planning to attend summer camps to contact the organizers running the program and inquire about this support.

A complete list of participating organizations and links to their websites will be posted on the CUF website in the coming days.

Background

In January 2022 the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation launched the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal – a joint effort to provide humanitarian relief to displaced persons in medical care, emergency shelter and food security. Today, Russia’s increased attacks on Ukraine have resulted in 15M affected people, including 6M who have left Ukraine, the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II. Thousands of displaced Ukrainians, primarily mothers and children, have made their way to Canada.

Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal received around $40M in donations from all corners of Canada, including funds from provinces, family foundations, corporations, organizations, churches, large and small businesses, and tens of thousands of individual donors across the country. The funds deployed to date have been used to provide emergency humanitarian relief in emergency food, hygiene, and medical supplies for the millions of affected families in and around Ukraine.

Some donors have also approached the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and offered their generous donations to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada.

As a result of the increasing volume of these requests across Canada, the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal has launched a parallel Fund to track and deploy support to displaced Ukrainian families in Canada.

All donors giving to CUF can decide whether to donate to emergency humanitarian support in and around Ukraine, or to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada, by visiting the CUF website or mailing their donation to CUF’s office.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress brings together all the national, provincial, and local Ukrainian Canadian organizations under one umbrella.

The Canada-Ukraine Foundation was formed in 1995 to coordinate, develop, organize, and deliver assistance projects generated by Canadians and directed to Ukraine. For almost three decades, the Canada-Ukraine Foundation has helped coordinate and provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine as it strives to strengthen its democracy through economic prosperity and freedom.

Syringes Delivered to Hospitals in Need – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Update

The Ukrainian people continue their heroic defence of their homeland from Russia’s genocidal war. The humanitarian situation in Ukraine is critical and the needs are immense. Thanks to your generous support and commitment the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is able to deliver aid and assistance– both in Ukraine and to Ukrainians who have sought refuge in bordering countries.

CUF continues to assist the currently strained healthcare sector in Ukraine, at the same time rapidly aligning our partner linkages for an impactful result. One such successful project started when Orest Sushko at Humber College in Toronto reached out to us, having recognized that a substantial quantity of a medical product could be made available for Ukraine: namely, high-quality syringes that were in supply on campus. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and now with the war in Ukraine, Humber has worked with our community partners to provide assistance whenever we could,” said Tyler Charlebois, Director, Centres of Innovation Network and Partnership Development, Humber College. “We are so pleased that more than 165,000 unused syringes left over from our COVID-19 vaccination clinics were able to be shipped to Ukraine to provide some medical supply relief during the humanitarian crisis happening there.”

Source: The Ottawa Citizen

Generous donations of life-saving equipment were collected from the Montfort Hospital, Queensway Carleton Hospital, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, The Ottawa Hospital, Brockville General Hospital, the Kingston Health Sciences Centre and Healthcare Linen Services.

The collection of donations from hospitals was led by Dr. Tetyana Rogalska, and CUF funded the logistics costs of the movement to Ukraine.

“This lifesaving equipment is in addition to the previous 60 pallets over the past 2 months. We are actively seeking additional donations from hospitals and suppliers across Canada,” said Victor Hetmanczuk, Chair of the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Committee.

Due to security issues, CUF will not identify the receiving locations institutions in Ukraine. Please donate to the appeal today to support millions of Ukrainian families who have been displaced from their homes. #HelpUkraineNow

Support for Strained Healthcare Sector – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Update

The Ukrainian people continue their heroic defence of their homeland from Russia’s genocidal war. The humanitarian situation in Ukraine is critical and the needs are immense. Thanks to your generous support and commitment the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is able to deliver aid and assistance– both in Ukraine and to Ukrainians who have sought refuge in bordering countries.

CUF rushed the large shipment to Ukraine and directed it for efficient and strategic distribution by the recently-formed Medical Service of the Plast National Scout Organization of Ukraine, which along with its partner organizations quickly determined four metropolitan areas of focus where the Russian attacks on the country had resulted in major humanitarian need. Dr. Markian Mandziuk, Acting Head of Plast Medical Service, noted, “We have no right to stop, and we will not stop! Plast Medical Service will continue to help the people of Ukraine, for a speedy victory and a better tomorrow for our motherland!” Ukrainian hospital staffers sent this message about the syringes, for their new Canadian friends: “We are grateful for your help and your caring. These syringes are interesting to use, because we had used simpler ones in our usual work, but we learn quickly and use them to help civilians who now need help.”

Two Months of Russian Invasion – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Update

It has been two months since Russia launched a full-out invasion of Ukraine, bombing Ukrainian cities and towns, targeting civilians and committing war crimes and crimes against humanity on a massive scale.

Earlier this week, Canada’s House of Commons unanimously recognized Russia’s actions acts of genocide against the Ukrainian people

The Ukrainian people are heroically defending their homeland from Russia’s war, but the humanitarian situation is critical and the needs immense. Thanks to your generous support and commitment the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is able to deliver aid and assistance– both in Ukraine and to Ukrainians who have sought refuge in bordering countries.

The Appeal has delivered millions of dollars in crucial aid that is helping people survive through partnerships and cooperation with more than a dozen organizations.

One such organization is the Ukrainian Deminers Association (UDA).The UDA has been a partner of CUF since mid 2021 and up until February 24 they were helping identify land mines for safe removal so that farmers might once again safely work their fields to provide food and a livelihood. The UDA’s adaptability in changing their scope to now deliver humanitarian aid demonstrates the value of CUF’s strong and dynamic working relationships with its partners on the ground who are able to respond quickly to the changing needs.

The Ukrainian Deminers Association is providing assistance to war-affected people in the oblasts of Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv and Kharkiv oblasts. As of two weeks ago, thanks to support provided by the CUF, over 1300 people have been provided with assistance – food, medicine, hygiene products, building materials and money of up to UAH 1,500 per person. The UDA stated, “We continue working for the sake of Ukrainians and our victory! We truly thank our Ukrainian Canadians and concerned Canadian citizens!”

Easter Greetings from the Canada-Ukraine Foundation

This Easter, our thoughts and hearts are with millions of Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes, their loved ones, and those who lost family members in this war. Our prayers are with brave Ukrainian defenders, volunteers, and those who help Ukraine in so many different ways.

While all of us watch in horror the atrocities being committed in Ukraine, the Canada Ukraine Foundation was created to help precisely during this type of crisis.

Partnering with UCC, we established the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal to help streamline efforts in assistance to displaced persons, medical care, emergency shelter and food security.

Generous support from communities and donors all across Canada has enabled us to deliver aid within days of the onset of the attacks and continue to deliver the assistance and be able to do so for the coming months. The need will not go away soon.

With your support, we will continue to help Ukrainians as they rebuild their lives in the coming months and years.

We hope that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ will bring the revival of hope and future to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.

There will always be a Ukraine!

Слава Україні!

Героям Слава!

Aid Delivered to North, East and South of Ukraine – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Update

Since Russia launched a full-out war on Ukraine on February 24, aid has been delivered to some of the hardest-hit cities in the north, east and south of Ukraine. We are withholding more specific information due to security concerns.

The Humanitarian Appeal has also delivered aid to Ukrainian displaced persons in Romania and Moldova. CUF is working with more than a dozen organizations and projects to help alleviate the worst humanitarian crisis in Europe since WWII.

In the coming weeks, CUF/UCC will continue to share information about the organizations, programs, and projects that your generous donations are supporting.

The Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is supporting the work of GlobalMedic, who are assisting Ukrainians displaced to neighbouring countries and internally in Ukraine. In Ukraine, Romania and Moldova GlobalMedic is distributing food, hygiene products and other aid.

Irina, a refugee from Kyiv, is one of the people who GlobalMedic assisted. To hear her story please click below:

In Lviv, GlobalMedic and a “local partner have taken over a restaurant in Lviv. Funded by GlobalMedic, this local restaurant serves free meals to Ukrainians living in or passing through Lviv. GlobalMedic has set up at the train station, providing these free meals to families directly after disembarking the train.” GlobalMedic has also shipped medication and medical supplies to Warsaw, which were transported to support a hospital in Lviv. “Additionally, GlobalMedic has purchased 5,000 First Aid Kits, which will be sent overseas to families in Ukraine. Some of GlobalMedic’s Ukrainian-speaking volunteers translated instructional videos made to demonstrate how the contents of the kits should be used.”

More than $30M pledged by Canadians – Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Update

April 9, 2022. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, organizations and businesses, the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal is pleased to announce that $30 million in donations have been pledged across Canada. This includes more than 55,000 donations from large corporations, community fundraising events and individual donors.

“With almost $10M in aid delivered and committed, we know that the scale of Russia’s violent war on Ukraine will mean the need to support Ukraine for many months and years,” said Orest Sklierenko, President of the Canada Ukraine Foundation. “The Ukrainian Canadian community will be there to provide support and deliver much-needed aid to help with the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War 2.”

For 27 years the Canada Ukraine Foundation has been working to support humanitarian projects in Ukraine. Many stakeholders and donors have entrusted CUF with their support, and CUF will continue to evaluate the needs on the ground and deliver support when and where it is required, taking care to assess the impact of each provision of aid prior to using the same channel again.

The Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal has also delivered aid to Ukrainian displaced persons in Romania and Moldova. CUF is working with more than a dozen organizations and projects to help alleviate the worst humanitarian crisis in Europe since WWII.

The following article by Marco Levytsky was published April 7 in New Pathway Ukrainian News https://newpathway.ca/cuf-helps-evacuate-2500-deaf-ukrainians/

CUF helps evacuate 2500 deaf Ukrainians

Some 2500 deaf Ukrainians have been evacuated to safety thanks to the generosity of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.

Transportation has been by bus, train, and private vehicles, and some of the deaf citizens from eastern Ukraine have been moved to deaf centres and schools in Western Ukraine. Humanitarian aid is also being used for food, water, and life necessities.

CUF funds are also supporting countless others staying in the country, and cover the crucial sign language interpreting services, says Debra Russell, former President of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters and member of the Alberta Stands with Ukraine group.

Sign language interpreters have largely stayed in Ukraine and were volunteering until we were able to support them. The government updates are interpreted, as well interpreting is happening at hospitals, government offices for people to secure papers required to leave, in deaf centres where people go for the latest updates on the war.
